Monterey County: California's First Certified Blue Zones County

Monterey County: California's First Certified Blue Zones County

  • 03/9/26

In August 2025, Monterey County made history — becoming the first county in the state of California to earn the Certified Blue Zones Community® designation.

Blue Zones are rewarded to communities around the world where people live longer, healthier, and more connected lives. Okinawa, Sardinia, and Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula are some examples.

The Monterey Peninsula is now classified as a Blue Zone, not because of geography alone, but because of intentional choices made across an entire community.

For buyers considering a move to the Peninsula,  this designation means a higher quality, longer life.

The Environment: Air That Heals, Landscapes That Restore

The Monterey Peninsula sits at the edge of one of the most ecologically rich coastlines in North America. The Peninsula is home to some of the highest quality air in the country, rolling across a shoreline of cypress, kelp forest, and sand dunes.

Blue Zones research consistently points to natural environments as one of the most powerful factors for longevity. Residents enjoy proximal access to Pebble Beach's 17-Mile Drive, the mountains of Big Sur, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, and numerous stunning natural landmarks.  The Peninsula's temperate allows for outdoor exploration of trails, beaches, and open spaces year-round.

"Monterey County's achievement is a testament to what's possible when an entire region commits to well-being — and it stands as a model for communities across the nation." — Ben Leedle, CEO, Blue Zones

A Place Built for Active Living

One of the core Blue Zones principles is "Move Naturally" — the world's longest-lived people live in environments where movement is simply woven into daily life.

Over 68% of Monterey County residents now report regular physical activity — a figure that reflects both the infrastructure built over the past seven years and the landscape itself. Complete Streets initiatives have made walking and cycling safer and more intuitive across the Peninsula's communities. Dozens of walking groups launched through the Blue Zones Project have become a fixture of neighborhood life.

Add world-class golf, open-water swimming, coastal cycling, hiking, and kayaking across the Bay — and the Peninsula offers a wealth of active outdoor opportunities like no other.

The Table as a Cornerstone of Life

Blue Zones communities are defined in part by their food culture — particularly plant based and locally sourced. The Monterey Peninsula's relationship with food is deeply rooted in the land itself.

The Salinas Valley — the "Salad Bowl of the World" — lies minutes from Peninsula neighborhoods, supplying some of the freshest produce in the country directly to local markets, restaurants, and farm stands. Sixty-two Peninsula restaurants are now Blue Zones Project Approved™, offering thoughtfully curated menus. Fourteen grocery stores have introduced dedicated Blue Zones sections and healthy checkout lanes.

Where Community Is a Way of Life

When artists, writers, and poets began settling in Carmel-by-the-Sea in the early 1900s — they were drawn by the wilderness, idyllic nature of the town, the sense of being at the edge of the world — they created something that has defined this place ever since: a community built around meaning, beauty, and the pursuit of a life well lived.

Blue Zones research is clear that strong social ties are among the single greatest predictors of a long life — and the Peninsula has always had them in abundance. This is, at its heart, a small town. Neighbors know each other by name. There is a rhythm to community life here that larger cities simply cannot replicate, building the social fabric that longevity researchers point to again and again.

Underpinning it all is world-class health infrastructure. Salinas Valley Health and Montage Health — both deeply embedded in the community and active stewards of the Blue Zones mission going forward — ensure that the Peninsula's commitment to well-being is not a moment in time. It is a permanent feature of life here.
